Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th day of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great tool to engage in activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to convey messages through the medium of art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism as a young student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house for a specific member of the Jury. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
